weekend maddness

Often, when I do a makeover for a person, I tell them that I need to see more of their personality.. the personality that their clothes reflects. I want to see more elements of their lifestyles, something that matches the occasion. for example, take resort wear- going out for a vacation is a time to let go, get free of the stuffiness of their routine lifestyle. so why not? why not do it completely, along with the clothing.. spice your clothes up a bit, go free, romantic, maybe, sexy.. for those few days that you spend away.

On a similar note, long weekend is coming up, and I’ve been hit by a surge of interested, prospective buyers who want to know what they can do for their weekend off… with their clothes, that is. This got me thinking, “What would I do?” So I pulled out my designing skills, and got this together ( this one for getting the pattern right i stitched the sample myself )  , something that I’d love to wear on my few days off, but not anywhere else.. something different. Here’s what i put together and photography by Rashmi did complete justice to the out fit . Accessorized with  a watch and a handmade ring from Amrapalli ._DSC1082 copy_DSC1097 _DSC1107

So just analyze your lifestyle and your personality so you can have a wardrobe that fits   that .

Treasured junk in my trunk

Every other day i am asked on how to arrange the wardrobe . So instead of just saying i thought to pen it down along with the pictures of my own wardrobe .

Doing it in parts and today it is about how i arrange my jewellery . Staying in an apartment i don’t have the luxury of space . I use the sliding draw under my bed to treasure all the junk 🙂

At a glance –

IMG_5062

I like to see all of them at a glance so i leave most of the smaller boxes (  shoe boxes or plastic storage boxes )  without the lids on .

I keep all my rings in  a big box ( have reused a cardboard box ) , i keep cotton balls in between,so they don’t rub against each other .

IMG_5065 IMG_5066

I keep the precious ( stone /gem) and delicate rings in individual boxes.

IMG_5067

Teaming up same size and same color earrings / delicate necklaces  in a box which has small partitions , saves the time that you would  be spending taking them apart  . Oftentimes, my clients claim not to have any accessories to pair with their outfits, yet the truth is that they forget what they DO have.

IMG_5068 IMG_5069

The chunky beads/pendant and expensive gem/beads are individually packed in velvet or cotton lined boxes.

The fancy necklaces and pendants are individually wrapped and kept in two sections –     1. Colored      2. Gold/Copper/Silver

IMG_5076 IMG_5064

Not much of bangle person and i like to stack them in a box so i can see them all together.

IMG_5074

Watches are wrapped in individual velvet pouches , i leave a bit of strap peeping out of the pouch hence easier to identify them without having to open  each  pouch to find the one you want .

So yes, go ahead arrange your accessories and enjoy wearing them too 🙂

Crazy formals

IMG_4981

There are some days when constantly changing outfits is not an option. Today, since I had to meet a very successful entrepreneur, who is now a budding politician, my outfit needed to be very versatile. I love putting together my crazy Wednesday outfits, and I didn’t want to pass up the chance today, thus the mustard colored necklace. I was going for a formal look, with a black tweed jacket, and tan boots, paired with khaki, fitted trousers. The watch is one of my favorites, a brown large-dial. Keeping my hair and makeup simple as possible, I had loads of fun putting together a combination like this one, crazy and formal.

This crazy-formal outfit wasn’t the talk of the day though with my client. We found a common ground in our passion and hopes of seeing India “Go Green” someday. As a fashion fanatic, I can’t wait till fashion goes eco friendly  or clothing that are recycled , but there is so much connected to this whole eco  fashion idea.

Walking on the roads I constantly shop on, there’s always an overload of goods (cheap products or export surplus) or trash lining the streets. Sometimes it’s just plastic, but sometimes it’s even cloth, clothes that have been discarded carelessly. Some people shop, but once they take their bags home, and try on their clothes, they realize that they aren’t the right style after all. The clothes then find themselves discarded, never worn. This might be a small thing, but with so many people doing this, it’s become a big issue. If only we knew what suits our personality, lifestyle, body style, career profile , color profile and how to build a wardrobe with limited number of outfits !!!

Pink Glass

My Tuesday wardrobe consisted of one of my favorite #BAJA  dresses,

IMG_4967IMG_4970IMG_4976

A collage of white and pink chiffon fabrics. The dress looks three- toned because of the overlap, and the dress is backed with stretchy lining. My necklace is lace with glass beads hanging off it, and the watch is antique finish , with floral designs. The lack of earrings stop the dress from becoming too dressy, and the vest in pale pink completes the look.

Layering

Many women ( and men too)  are afraid to layer their clothes for fear of looking bigger than they actually are. While logic would lead one to believe that this claim is true, if you’ve mastered the art of layering this couldn’t be further from the truth. A perfectly layered look will compliment your curves and create the illusion of a more proportional silhouette.

Choice of fabric for the jackets /shrugs or cardigans (the layer) should depend on the weather and occasion.

In winter i wore the dress with red leather biker jacket and summer i wore it with a brown cotton knit cardigan.

Layering also gives you options to create different look with the same dress .

Drape up

Sarees will never lose their hold on us starry eyed women. Draped well, a sari can be the best friend that diamonds are often not. Today just seemed to me like the day I’d like to spend my time on draping a sari. Of course, it’s all worth it in the end, all the struggling with yards of pretty cloth. More often than not, people do not trust the aforementioned fact. Some people don’t wear saris, however flattering they may be, with the myth lodged tightly in their brains that sarees are either much too girly, or traditional. Therefore, they believe that saris do not ‘go with their personalities’. I beg to differ.

Sarees can be modified to fit any personality, and I think what I wore today is a perfect example of this. A kalamkari sari, covered in not the usual floral print, but abstract ovals with a pallu of the usual kalamkari print. Paired with a chunky, solid copper pendant, and a big-dial mens watch a sareeIMG_4875

can be quite a fashion statement. Not too girly, lacking the normal floral, shiny jewelry that often tends to be paired with saris of the type, the outfit is comfortable and light.

So drape up 🙂

think. shop. proceed

I had a client some time ago who was visiting India from Europe. When I took him out for shopping, after which  he expressed his surprise and excitement thus – “This is so cool ! I just have to go to the right places that have my exact clothes – and not waste my time visiting every other shop!”.

IMG_2753IMG_2755

Asking someone for help with something that is easy for most people can be kind of scary. Sometimes it is more a matter of pride than anything else. Unfortunately, not all people find the same things easy and I would be embarrassed as well , if I had to ask someone for help at a simple math problem, or something as such.

The same way, most people are reluctant to admit to themselves or anybody else that they cannot pick out clothes that would look good on them. So, they often end up shopping with a person who they think is style conscious enough to be of help. But, this is never enough to pick out the perfect clothes. Another problem with shopping with this ‘style conscious’ friend is that the person commonly ends up with bags full of the friends personality, and nothing that they’d actually ever wear. Other times, the person feels like they’ve been looking too long anyhow, and ends up subconsciously deciding that the next outfit to be seen is the one to take home.

Sometimes, this person may be confident in their abilities to shop fashionable, but in pursuit of the latest trends, forget that it is also important to shop in accordance to lifestyle and personality. Shopping smart is also very important as budgeting time and money makes up a large part of good shopping.

Luckily, when it comes to shopping, I’m in element and I understand that this is one of those things that a lot of people find difficult. By this, I don’t mean that they find shopping as such difficult, but shopping in accordance to their needs and appearance.
