What is lifestyle analysis and why do we do it ?

IMG_4176

Understanding a person’s personality and lifestyle can tell us a lot about whether he/she is living life to the fullest or living a mechanical, strait-jacketed way of life. I recently came across this interesting article on dealing with routine by Deepak Chopra that talks about how routine influences our quality of life. Your lifestyle broadly fits into two categories – One is an unconscious lifestyle that creates an active feedback loop that takes new inputs everytime and leads to a better life experience, while the other creates a conscious one (called the “reactive rut”) that results in a dull and uninspiring life. The article talks about examining our routines so that we can rise above routine and live an alert and a wholesome life.

A routine driven life therefore can undermine the creative and lively sides of your personality. An important aspect of image makeover is to have your image portray your true personality and to understand if and why they are out of sync. The connection, as I mentioned above is your lifestyle When I look at someone’s lifestyle, I look at what they do and how they spend their time – professionally, with family, socially and for recreation. All this tells me how routine driven their life is and allows me to tweak their routines to help them realize their true potential and experience all their various personality traits. Sometimes this involves breaking an existing routine or distancing oneself from a negative influence, or even starting afresh and taking a new path. To illustrate the concept better, consider these real life examples –

  1. A is an social and caring person, but she lives a routine driven life as an IT professional. As a result, her life was in reactive, autopilot mode, with little spontaneity. In order for her to break the routine and experience the other sides of her personality, I helped her connect with a social work group and volunteer her time on a part time basis for a social cause. Today, she counsels students on a weekly basis and is involved in several other social gatherings.
  2. B is a well placed and influential beauracrat , who has an outgoing and lively personality, but lives a predictable life due to the nature of his work. He loves parties and dancing. Getting him enrolled in a dance class was all that was needed.
  3. C is a single mom who has been divorced for 15 years. Single handedly, she takes care of her old parents , sisters and a college going daughter. Taking care of her responsibilities and her job takes up all her energy and time, leaving little time to experience her true outgoing nature. I connected her to a networking group and a travel group that helps singles to travel together, giving them the much needed adventure and companionship, a sense of carefree abandon and most importantly – the joy of pampering themselves.

Break through and live life to your fullest 🙂

Drape up

Sarees will never lose their hold on us starry eyed women. Draped well, a sari can be the best friend that diamonds are often not. Today just seemed to me like the day I’d like to spend my time on draping a sari. Of course, it’s all worth it in the end, all the struggling with yards of pretty cloth. More often than not, people do not trust the aforementioned fact. Some people don’t wear saris, however flattering they may be, with the myth lodged tightly in their brains that sarees are either much too girly, or traditional. Therefore, they believe that saris do not ‘go with their personalities’. I beg to differ.

Sarees can be modified to fit any personality, and I think what I wore today is a perfect example of this. A kalamkari sari, covered in not the usual floral print, but abstract ovals with a pallu of the usual kalamkari print. Paired with a chunky, solid copper pendant, and a big-dial mens watch a sareeIMG_4875

can be quite a fashion statement. Not too girly, lacking the normal floral, shiny jewelry that often tends to be paired with saris of the type, the outfit is comfortable and light.

So drape up 🙂

think. shop. proceed

I had a client some time ago who was visiting India from Europe. When I took him out for shopping, after which  he expressed his surprise and excitement thus – “This is so cool ! I just have to go to the right places that have my exact clothes – and not waste my time visiting every other shop!”.

Asking someone for help with something that is easy for most people can be kind of scary. Sometimes it is more a matter of pride than anything else. Unfortunately, not all people find the same things easy and I would be embarrassed as well , if I had to ask someone for help at a simple math problem, or something as such.

The same way, most people are reluctant to admit to themselves or anybody else that they cannot pick out clothes that would look good on them. So, they often end up shopping with a person who they think is style conscious enough to be of help. But, this is never enough to pick out the perfect clothes. Another problem with shopping with this ‘style conscious’ friend is that the person commonly ends up with bags full of the friends personality, and nothing that they’d actually ever wear. Other times, the person feels like they’ve been looking too long anyhow, and ends up subconsciously deciding that the next outfit to be seen is the one to take home.

Sometimes, this person may be confident in their abilities to shop fashionable, but in pursuit of the latest trends, forget that it is also important to shop in accordance to lifestyle and personality. Shopping smart is also very important as budgeting time and money makes up a large part of good shopping.

Luckily, when it comes to shopping, I’m in element and I understand that this is one of those things that a lot of people find difficult. By this, I don’t mean that they find shopping as such difficult, but shopping in accordance to their needs and appearance.

Quick fix Image makeover !!! Really

I frequently encounter this question when I meet people at parties, social gatherings and a host of other places. Questions range from – “How can I change my image” ? or “what is wrong with my dressing ? “ to “can you suggest me a set of colors and styles ?” . This is akin to asking a psychiatrist in a casual conversation – “Do you think I’m suicidal?”
To all these people, here is what I have to say –
While I appreciate the interest and the new wave of awareness among Men and Women for their images, dressing sense and how they are perceived, I must point out that there are no short cuts to transforming your image and/or your looks. Image consulting, like other consulting professions such as medical or psychiatric, follows a similar set of principles and guidelines based on sound scientific facts and analysis. The process begins with a meeting (can be online or offline) to understand the persons needs, lifestyle, body style, personality….. and then, over a series of sessions, tries to narrow down to the actions/remedies to achieve the desired result. The sessions could be done online or in person, but the process must be followed diligently in order to achieve the proper outcome.

SUNSHINE

Once in a while, one gets to make acquaintance with a person with a beautiful personality. These kind of days are worth all the other days, that may not have been as good. Today was one of those days. The woman I met today inspired me, helped me see everything around me slightly differently and THAT, has made all the difference, I think.

I have always thought that, as an image consultant, I am the one on the ‘helping side’. For these rare, above mentioned ‘once in a whiles’ though, my position seems undecided, as this woman helped me, just about as much as I could ever have helped her.

She began with her story, telling it like it was no more than a mere tale, a story in a book, but it was all real, and she was extremely open about her experiences. That was the first thing intriguing about her, she trusted me with her story, me, a stranger to her, and there was something really touching in that one tiny gesture. She told me her story from the beginning, her birth into a typical Indian family, a family with strong beliefs that girl children were burdens. She was the first of three girls, and was to be married off as soon as possible.

She took charge, and for the sake of her two little sisters, fought against both, her parents, and her community, for her right to education. She completed her education, and went for engineering. A girl fighting was unheard of, as it is, but she went one step further and pursued her dream.

This kind of story, I have often observed, is usually accompanied with the kind of voice that one associates with complaints or regrets. I was surprised to detect absolutely none of the two in her voice as she told me her life story. There was an air of positivity to her, and it was almost as though you could absorb it, simply by standing there, or talking to her.

She came to me today, simply after reading my website, and endearingly revealed all she could about herself to me immediately. By the time she’d finished her story, she had also requested to start a session with me. The aftermath did not matter. Today was today, and she’d brave tomorrow as it came. I was still stunned by her attitude, and attitude so rare, a gem of true sorts.

Attitude is so important, and the trust she placed in me was huge. Those two things about this one woman made my day. She has taught me a lot more than she will ever know – about life, and attitudes, and mostly about holding my head high, even when circumstances say differently. I cannot encourage others to be who she is, when I have not gotten there myself, but I was inspired by her, I feel those who haven’t, or may never get to meet her, should also be just as privileged to simply ‘know’ about her, as I am.

How do you decide – what to wear and where ?

How do you decide ?

So what would you wear? if you are being interviewed as an entrepreneur and designer 🙂

So today being that day  i decided to wear a BAJAdress , in elegant wide u neckline adorned with a delicate midnight blue cotton lace overlay,  while sheer panels along the shoulders and bottom infuse your ensemble with a hint of dramatic panache. Wearing shoes in suede , silver , gold beaded necklace and a bold watch ( keep the no. of accessories  to maximum 3, so you won’t clutter the look . Hence if wearing this dress as evening wear add a glittered clutch,  you can’t help but feel as glamorous as you look!

Being a image makeover consultant I advice to follow 4 rules and hence making sure that you feel confident and dressed right .

1. To know your color profile – When clothing worn that compliments your color profile , you look more healthy and confident.

2. To know your personality style – Wearing clothing according to your lifestyle , body type ,  career and personality so you are who you are – better U

3. To know your audience or people you are going to meet  –  Meeting with your clients , pitching your business plan to investors or meeting your child’s teacher .

4. To know the occasion – can be a event where you are the speaker , or a conference  or just a casual visit to mall .

cheers to the confident “U” 🙂
