A day of shopping !!

Feeling like I stepped out of an old British painting, my lace umbrella completed the dainty getup of a Vintage skirt , tailor fit top, and wine, net scarf. With my hair in a low bun of pinned up curls, I set out, not for a boat ride across the Thames, but a day of shopping ( with client ) in the merciless heat of Bangalore streets.

Shopping is a crucial part in image makeover, tiring and exciting too.

Kept the makeup really subtle as i knew i am going to be under the hot sun. Just a dash of mauve on my lips and cheeks.

Enjoy your day outdoors , keep yourself we hydrated and remember your sunscreen.

Winding staircase

I am an image makeover consultant. I toil to help people look and feel they way they aspire to . Many people come to me with a fervent desire to change themselves completely, from inside out. Yet, there are a few common misconceptions about this change. This change is a staircase. It’s a slow climb to the top, with only baby steps to be taken. There is no way to avoid these steps, or skip them like we’d normally do. A jump to the top will not suffice. To be that beautiful person we see at the very top of the winding staircase, we must take the baby steps.
The same way, people often think that they will suddenly undergo a drastic change that will irrefutably change their lives for the better. Unfortunately, this is not true. The drastic change is not abrupt. It is a gradual process, and there is no particular moment when a person changes from the person they are to the person they hope to be.
I am reminded of a recent experience with a client, on this particular matter. She was also under the illusion that her change would be a moments matter. We had been shopping for quite some time, yet there was nothing about her that was changing. She continued to stash away all the things that we bought, and wore her old clothes instead. Her undergarments and new perfect clothes remained in their fancy bags. Why? She was waiting for the moment when she could bring everything out, and be the person that she was just learning to be. She needed the perfect moment to emerge from her cocoon. This was where she went wrong. She could not have expected to be perfect within a matter of minutes. It was something that she had to be practicing all the time, for herself. She had to take the tiny steps that would gradually lead her to the top.
Another experience drifts to mind, as I emphasize the importance of small steps that make the biggest differences. A client of mine began with small changes in her daily lifestyle like the introduction of self talks, and constant positive affirmations. This pulled her out of depression, her daily routines have changed for the better, she is also more open, and interactive with people. She faces situations with more confidence. Now, she has gradually made her way to the next step, which is the ‘outer self’. Without the changes that fixed her ‘inner self’, she could not have ever been truly made over.
So, to abolish the misconception about image makeovers, I want to point out that it is not merely a change of a few outfits, or a haircut. It is not the comparison between a before and after picture, it is a gradual, carefully planned transition to a better you.

Erase and reprogram – The power of self talk !

Ashu ( now 14 year old)  was just 18 months old when we decided to move to US . She was a very shy child , the moment she will see someone coming closer to her she would come running to us and hide behind us and people would invariably say ” oh! your daughter is too shy ” . I was more angered by the comments than my daughters shyness.

Got hold of a book What To Say When You Talk To Yourself  by Shad Helmstetter and then starts my fascination for self talk.

The first self talk that we wrote for our daughter –

I am very bold  and i can say hello

I am very beautiful , i have lovely hair and skin

I can do magic with words and i love numbers .

I love me and respect others .

She was   just two and she would repeat after us before she went to bed . Yes, people have teased us and told that it is brain washing  and then i would say if people around us can do the negative brain washing  then definitely a positive one can minimize the damage .

Self talk !!!
Self Talk is the way your mind speaks to you in all situations, from daily routines to difficult life events. It is the voice that can either encourage you or chastise you. The good news is by listening to your inner dialog and shifting it to become more in line with what you really want, you can transform your life.

Now i help people to write their own self talk , image makeover that starts from “inside “.

As for Ashu , she has grown up to be a amazing confident young lady, a rebel ( at 14 )  but a pretty confident one 🙂

New wardrobe or call it wardrobe restyling :)

I remember that moment so very clearly, when she ( let me not name her , let us call her Mrs L) calls up and ask me if i am available  that weekend to help her in shopping/wardrobe restyling.

From some one who is been following my page and FB photos She came to a not so familiar city stayed back for two days and did what she came for “SHOPPING with Babita jaishankar ” , thank you for trusting me Mrs L

“Hi Babita
I’ve booked my tickets and will arrive in Bangalore at 11am tomorrow. She ( that is Amrutha  ) mentioned that we can meet after 12pm and follow up with two days of shopping. I return to Hyderabad  on Monday evening.”

And the next two days where we were hopping from  from one  trial room to another , me eagerly waiting, going through tons of accessories – jewellery, bags and shoes and it ended all well with an amazing wardrobe.

IMG_2750 IMG_2751 IMG_2753 IMG_2755 IMG_2756Being a classic personality she  likes her garment to be well fitted, classic pieces but if not kept on watch their wardrobe or dressing tends to get little boring. So i have added some bling to the footwear and some interesting accessories. She has a clear color profile so the colors what we choose are also clear .

Style me !!!! Empower me !!!!

It all started when she came to office,  with a fragile body and a strong mind there she was  asking me to do a image makeover for her .  She said she dosen’t know if she can afford my services  but she surely needs it . Now i was curious in knowing whY she wants a  image makeover, to most of the people it is something that would make them glamorous and i had no doubt in my mind that she was going to ask to suggest her something that would make her fair . NO, she said she is absolutely very proud of her skin tone – hmmmm now it is getting more interesting , i am thinking then why is she here. So this is what she told me that encouraged me to start SMEM initiative .

She grew up in a joint family, dad passed away when she was just a kid and mom works as a domestic help in half dozen houses.  But her  mom made sure that her daughter  gets proper education, so here she is with a degree in nursing but no job yet .

She said she was turned down even before she could face the actual interview, she was asked to go back from the venue because she was not dressed right .  And she came to me asking for help and i knew with no job in hand and no income she can pay me my fees . I helped her to get dressed for the interview and i did not charge her anything. Then i thought there would be so many more who would need my help but for how many more i can do it for free and yes for everything we turn to FB and i did exactly that . I asked for help, help me to help others :).

The response was amazing and this was the first meeting we had for Style me !!! Empower me !!!

Helping people radiate outwardly while in pursuit of their dreams means providing emotional support, as well as practical. Knowing what to do is half the battle; the other half is applying what you know to your daily routine.

Empowerment is our goal; therefore teaching  how to apply our techniques for themselves is critical. Learning how to take care of yourself is not always learned in one lesson, especially when self-esteem is absent. We therefore offer a place and time to reinforce and review the learning from initial session.

What do we do- we provide a place to return for additional support – whether it be fashion advice, or further counsel on personal care. We feel that by offering a program with continuity to our services, we have a much better chance of restoring a positive self-image.

Image makeover is a very planned process, so go for it if you are committed to yourself

Wonderful world of skirts !!!!

Wonderful world of skirts

Most of the time when I am doing a wardrobe restyling  I find orphan skirts  because there is “nothing “ suitable to pair it with …

To start with be careful about how you select or buy skirts – Hem lengths of skirts change constantly but it’s important to stick with the length that flatters you most. I suggest that this will often be on the leanest part of your legs, which is usually mid-thigh or just above or below the knee or little above the ankle.

Here are some of the rules I follow while wearing or selecting tops (can be knitwear, blouses, tank tops , t- shirts )

  1. Go – Untucked – You can absolutely wear voluminous top over pencil or fitted skirt.

IMG_1981IMG_1024

2.  Tuck it in – Tuck the top in  to emphasize the waist .

IMG_1911

3.  Belt – the untucked – This is how you can make a longer and less form fitting top work with a skirt.  The belt can be loosely worn so that it rest on your natural waist or the one which fits your natural waist.

IMG_1202IMG_1455

4.  Buttoned up Cardigan – Button-up a cardigan and wear it with a skirt. Here the cardigan is acting as a top, rather than just a layering item.

DSC_0560DSC_0171

5.  Layer a cardigan over a tucked in sleeveless tank top – Tuck a plain tank top into a skirt and layer over a cardigan. The cardigan can be cropped or boyfriend. Cropped cardigans look great with A-line skirts whereas pencil skirts work with most lengths of cardigan. You can leave the cropped cardigans loose or partially buttoned. Longer length cardigans look best unbuttoned.

6. Tailored made tops –

DSC_0229DSC_0740IMG_0751

6.  Plain old tank tops –

Enjoy creating more options and excuses to wear skirts 🙂

Image Makeover on Deccan Chronicle

http://www.deccanchronicle.com/130517/lifestyle-fashionbeauty/article/%E2%80%98brand%E2%80%99-new-you

First impressions are always long lasting. Who can forget the popular sitcom Ugly Betty, and closer home Mona Singh in the local remake Jassi Jaisi Koi Nahi and how their lives changed after an image makeover. Many celebrities like Hrithik Roshan and Siddhartha Mallya have enrolled in classes to boost their confidence levels. Actor Duniya Rashmi was not doing so well in Sandalwood, but now the starlet is back with a bang, thanks to an image makeover. There are image consultants, queuing in by the dozen to help you step up the corporate ladder, or make a relationship successful and give you a head-to-toe revamp with complete personality development. We explore the trend which is catching on in the city.

Image makeovers can be adept at forging new relationships and maintaining old ones.

“I was depressed, but after enrolling into a 21-day image makeover session and some one-on-one sessions, I can now communicate with confidence and can handle crises. I have transformed physically too and that is a bonus. Infact, I had never travelled by flight before as I was scared. Now, I know all about dining and flying etiquette and took my first flight recently.”

Someone who almost gave up on life after a marriage and kids is Amrutha John, who came back with zeal to prove herself. She reveals, “After I got married and had children, I had to leave a successful career, but thanks to a few sessions, I’m now juggling both perfectly and am a happy person. I was under the misconception that image makeover is only about looking stylish. I did embrace a new sense of style, but more importantly, I realised that I have to follow my dreams, irrespective of how people judge me.”

Babita Jaishankar, who helps individuals project the image they desire, says, “People form impressions on how someone presents themselves, behaves, their speech, posture, eye contact, and etiquette. There are a lot of people who need help branding themselves — women, job-seekers, corporate executives and their spouses, new moms, brides/grooms, mothers resuming work, lawyers and their clients, cancer survivors, singles etc.”

Dare to Play with Patterns – What am I wearing today?

Playing with patterns – This time it is floral patterns on the vest with stripes on the dress, Stripes acts neutral and can help ground the floral pattern. In fact it can be the other way also… as they complement each other. Look for a unifying color and cut down the risk by choosing a bold shoe (As always I am risking it all by dual colored shoe 🙂 )..Try this –recycle an old dress and restyle your  wardrobe …do an Image Makeover for your wardrobe..

Thanks
